Advice for reuse

Study Skills - Year 1 Learning Group Activity Please play your group the podcast (available through the Study Skills Blackboard site). As it states in the introduction these characters are fictional and although they have been given loose roles of “too much” “too little” and “balanced” no one character has all bad or all good behaviours, they are a tool to convey a variety of learning styles both good and not so good! This is hopefully the first of several study skills related podcasts – they are meant to be a bit of fun so please feel free to have a laugh about the quality of acting but encourage students to keep an eye out for future podcasts as the messages should be helpful. Having played the pod cast please encourage the students to discuss some of the behaviours displayed: Students might want to think about some of the comments they related too – e.g. the library being intimidating or fear that other students are doing more / trying harder. This might be a good opportunity to encourage students not to compare themselves to others as everybody has different approaches to learning – it’s about what works for the individual. Go through the characters individually – what do the students think of Al and his behaviour? They might relate to his intimidation of libraries but how far do they think he’ll get by only using the internet? How much partying is too much partying? What about Tom? He’s very keen but what can too much work and stress result in? Over time stress can affect our immune, cardiovascular, digestive & Muscular skeletal system. Our bodies produce cortisol which blocks memory and learning. State the importance of a balanced life – too much or too little study is stressful. Make time for study as well as friends and relaxation. How about Norma – did she seem to have a good balance? How might living with these two very different students affect her? How might she manage this? (i.e. sticking to what works for her and trying not to compare or be lead too far astray) Perhaps think about professionalism – discuss that even as students we have a responsibility to manage ourselves professionally. What does this mean? How might we display professionalism? How do you think these characters will manage their professional persona? How would you feel if you saw Al in a pub and then a few weeks later he was working on a ward caring for a close relative of yours? Lastly discuss independent learning and what this means. How do we think these troublesome trio are likely to approach independent learning? Meg Bonner-Janes
