Midwifery

A mentor is a registrant who, following successful completion of an NMC approved mentor preparation programme - or comparable preparation that has been accredited by a University - has achieved the knowledge, skills and competence required to meet the defined mentor outcomes at stage 2 of the developmental framework (NMC 2008).

Nursing

A mentor is a registered nurse who has achieved the knowledge, skills and competence required to meet the mentor outcomes defined by the NMC (2008).

Occupational therapy

Four standards should be addressed within educational programmes relating to supporting learners in practice, namely working with clients, working with colleagues, written communication and health and safety policies (The College of Occupational Therapists (COT), 2009).

Physiotherapy

A practice facilitator is a qualified practitioner who directly supports a student’s learning during clinical education/practice-based learning (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), 2004).

Podiatry

Support for the learner should include being an information provider, role model, facilitator, assessor, planner (of the curriculum), resource developer (Fulton, 2013).
